The electrical conductivity testing (EC) of the marijuana Hydroponic nutrient solution is necessary for plant growth. Distilled water has an EC of zero meaning it doesn’t conduct electricity. But the higher the concentration of mineral ions in the water, the more electricity it conducts. Therefore the EC is a general measurement of the mineral content in the water and shows how to dilute or concentrated the nutrient solution is. By monitoring the solution on a regular basis, you help optimize your mix to maximize the plant growth.

A conductivity meter like the J.B.W. 2016 can be used for your Electrical Conductivity Testing. A conductivity reading of 1.2-3.5 Mho is ideal. A low Electrical Conductivity reading signifies a slightly dilute concentration. Low to medium levels of Electrical Conductivity promote vegetative growth and should be used in the vegetative growth stage. Medium to high levels of Electrical Conductivity slow vegetative growth, but improve marijuana quality. So medium to high Electrical Conductivity levels should be applied during the fruiting and flowering stage.

Generally speaking, use a half-strength nutrient solution for tender clones and seedlings, and use full strength nutrients when the marijuana plant is more mature. If the Electrical Conductivity level is too low, simply add more nutrient solution to the water. If the Electrical Conductivity gets too high, especially on hot days, add more water to the reservoir.
Since plants use different nutrients in varying degrees, the entire nutrient solution should be drained and replaced periodically to ensure that the proper mineral balance is maintained. For indoor gardening, replace the nutrient solution every ten days, or so, to prevent nutrient deficiencies from developing. Refer to out previous articles on setting up your solution. Once you establish a routine of measuring and adjustments, you’ll find you only spend a few minutes a day and will be thrilled with the end growth.
